FIELD TRIP AT SLOW POKE FARM
Book now for your Spring Field Trips....921-9632
It's not too early to schedule your Spring Field Trip to the farm. Some schools have chosen their day to visit already. Please don't delay and miss your chance to bring the students to see the many things happening on our farm in the spring. Call for more details.
Spring Field Trip Activities:
1. Hayride (every group does this)
Students view the pastures, ponds, and beef cattle with their calves. They feed the cattle and calves bread through the wooden fence.
They also stop in the woods to view the early spring wildflowers, turn over a decayed fallen tree to discover the good black topsoil and see many different insects scramble for cover, sometimes even catch a glimpse of a deer or wild turkey.
2. Visit the hen house (every group does this)
They learn about the hens and roosters, and sometimes baby chicks. They will learn their feed and water schedules, how often a hen lays, and explore an egg inside and out. They visit the hen house and see the nests and roost. They gather the eggs, pet the chickens and feed corn to every hungry bird. The students shell the corn on an antique corn sheller in the tobacco barn.
3. We are teaching students where their food comes from.
We walk through the early Spring Garden. If your class comes in the early spring they may plant some of the vegetables. We discuss the different parts of the plants.
4. We always have a make - and take home project. Listed below are some of the activities:
a. Planting a seed - we talk about the different things a plant needs to live - rain, soil, seed, care, space, etc.
b. Make a scarecrow for their own garden.
c. Make and discuss composting.
d. Decorate a clay saucer for the birds to drink out of.
e. Make a bird feeder.
Most classes choose an example above.
5. With the older students we collect samples of soil from different locations and compare texture, color, and how it absorbs water. We talk about erosion and crop rotation.
6. We feed the fish in the pond and talk about their environment.
7. We try to take time to teach and play games from yesteryear (drop the handkerchief, tire relay).
Here is a list of activities that we do for FALL FIELD TRIPS.
