2010 Field Trip AGENDA
COME SEE THE FIELDS BEING TILLED AND THE PLANTING BEGIN.
ENJOY MOTHER NATURE COMING TO LIFE!
We are a working farm consisting of 240 acres. We grow a huge vegetable garden that we use for our kitchen, canning, u-pick-vegetables, and Farmer's Markets. We have blackberries, apples, pears, and peach trees. We raise soybeans, pumpkins, hay and corn on our farm. We also have beef cattle and calves, goats, hens, roosters, and many chicks. Also a few piglets and rabbits are always around. All of the animals are watched over by a multitude of cats!
There will be a pony on the farm again this year. This will be the first time for us to have two baby calves for the students to bottle feed and perhaps even to brush. Our pot-bellied pig, Cupcake, is waiting for your visit. And, yes, we did get our sheep. Maybe by the time you get here there will be some ewes.
Listed below are some activities that are offered. I am always open to any suggestions. Many students have already been here, and, if the teacher will let me know in advance, I will plan new activities.
"HAYRIDE"
The students love riding in the hay wagon and viewing the pastures, ponds, and beef cattle with the calves. On most of these rides the students hand feed the cows. What a delight! Also, a stop in the woods to view the early spring wildflowers, turn over a decayed fallen tree to discover the good black topsoil and see many different insects scramble for cover, sometimes even catch a glimpse of a deer or wild turkey. There is so much to experience on the ride. Every student gets to pretend they are "driving the tractor".
"VISIT THE HEN HOUSE"
During this visit the students will learn about the he s, roosters, and baby chicks. They will learn their feed and water schedules, how often a hen lays, and explore an egg inside and out. They will visit the small hen house and see the nests and roost. They may gather the eggs, pet the chickens and feed corn to every hungry bird. The students will shell the corn on an antique corn sheller in the tobacco barn.
"WE ARE TEACHING STUDENTS WHERE THEIR FOOD COMES FROM"
Walk through the early spring garden and if your class comes in the early sprintg, they may help plant some of the vegetables. The students will see peas, carrots, beets, lettuce, and onions. Also, there will be cabbage, squash, and broccoli. Hopefully, the crops will be up and growing. We will discuss the different parts of the plants.
"WE ALWAYS HAVE A MAKE-AND-TAKE-HOME PROJECT FOR EACH STUDENT"
Planting a seed
Make a scarecrow for their own garden
Make a batch of compost
Plant lettuce in a container - looks great and fun to nibble
Decorate clay saucer for the birds to drink out of
Many other age suitable projects
We have purchased three (3) new toy pedal tractors for the younger children to use while "plowing the field". They love this!
The students will create a class mural of their day on the farm (complete with a presentation at the end of the day).
On some of the field trips last year, the students did all farm chores (this was a request from the teacher). We also collected soils from different locations. We compared texture, color, and how it absorbed water. We fed the fish in the pond by the corn crib and watched the ducks. We plowed the garden using an antique push plow and students mowed in the yard pushing an antique lawn mower. One student said all we do is work, but we tried to take time tio teach and play games from yesteryear (drop the handkerchief, tire relay, etc.). This year we are going to let the students make and drink "orange cows". What a treat!
There are so many things to see and do! Any group - large or small.
